Charcoal Shadowboxes

These charcoal shadowboxes explore the intersection of drawing and sculpture, blending detailed charcoal renderings with mixed media elements. Fabric is used as an organic backdrop to create dynamic negative space. Each rendered drawing is suspended within the shadowbox, the shadows cast from each individual piece add another layer of dimension and make this work even more breathtaking in person.

White Northern White Rhinos

This piece is a tribute to the last two remaining northern white rhinoceroses—a mother and daughter due.

Rendered in charcoal and suspended within a shadowbox, the rhinos are held in a moment of stillness, timeless and fragile. Their horns are accented with gold leaf foil, referencing the very reason they were hunted. The work serves as both a memorial and a warning—a reflection on what can happen when human cruelty and desire drive a species to functional extinction.

Hawksbill Sea Turtles

This piece features three hawksbill sea turtles suspended within a shadowbox, set against a backdrop of seafoam satin.

An authentic fishing net wraps around one turtle, symbolizing the very real threat of entanglement that endangers the species. Scattered throughout the composition are small sand dollars I personally found, adding both texture and a quiet sense of reverence to the work.

This work serves as both a tribute and a reminder—drawing attention to the fragile balance between natural beauty and human impact.

Koi Fish

Two koi fish swim through dark, charcoal-rendered waves. Traditionally, koi symbolize perseverance, resilience, and the strength to overcome obstacles. The surrounding ocean is illustrated in charcoal and layered over satin fabric, which evokes the movement and depth of a shadowed, wavelike sea beneath.

Encased within a shadowbox, the composition is suspended in space, creating a sense of stillness and timelessness.
